Fender for cars: find out more! How to choose, when to change , and how much they cost
A wing is a car body element with an arch for a wheel. This part protects the car’s components, as well as other road users including pedestrians, from dirt and stones flying from under the wheels when driving. Due to their streamlined shape, wings improve vehicle’s aerodynamic characteristics.
Types
By mounting location:
- Front. They are located along the engine compartment from the door to the bumper.
- Rear. Structurally they are an element of the body side. Rear wings are mounted along the luggage compartment above the rear wheel.
By fastening method:
- Removable. Bolts, nuts, and anchors are used for their fastening.
- Non-removable. They are a part of the car body. If they need to be replaced, this kind of wing should be cut or drilled off, and then a new one is attached by welding.
By material:
- Metal. They are notable by durability and repairability as they can be restored after deformation. However, they are prone to corrosion and characterized by considerable weight.
- Plastic. These parts are lightweight. They are resistant to moisture. Usually, they are less durable than the metal ones, excluding the parts made of carbon fiber.
Operating tips
Just as the other body elements, these components are prone to abrasive wear. For this reason, when washing your car, try to dampen the cloth, sponge, or brush as frequently as possible. Use a special shampoo for removing dirt, in order to avoid the necessity to rub the fouled areas. It is advisable to install wheel arch covers, if your car is used in off-road conditions or on poor quality roads. It is important that they could be mounted using the standard mounting holes. If it is impossible you need to thoroughly treat the area around the drilled holes in order to avoid corrosion. The outer side of the part can be protected with the help of an anti-gravel spray.
Do not install tyres with the size not stated in the vehicle specification by the manufacturer. Tyres that are wider or larger in diameter can contact the wing when turning corners. However, if you encounter this problem when using standard size tyres, have the wheels aligned and the condition of the suspension springs checked.
