A timing belt kit contains consumable elements of the valvetrain. It includes a belt, pulleys, springs, and fasteners, as well as other parts you might need to install these units. By using this kit in good time, you’ll be able to ensure faultless operation of the valvetrain.
Types
One timing belt kit differs from another in the list and types of parts they include. It all depends on the design of the specific vehicle and its valvetrain.
These kits may include the following pulley types:
- Idler: these allow deflection of the belt by bending it at a certain angle. They absorb vibrations on sections that are too long. They also prevent it from slipping and dampen resonance oscillations. Their surface can be smooth, grooved, or toothed. The first two types are installed on the outer side of the belt and the third one on the inner side.
- Tensioner: these are designed to tension the belt properly. Their performance directly affects the working condition of the entire valvetrain. The pulleys come with a manual or automatic tensioning mechanism. The latter includes a built-in spring or a hydraulic actuator.
As for the belts, they also vary depending on the vehicle make and model. The main differences include length, cross-section, and number of teeth.
Operating tips
Install a new timing belt kit every 50,000 kilometres. Always use specialised tools. Do not hit the pulleys during installation or they will break down fast. Always check that the belt is properly tensioned and the pulleys are aligned. Make sure the timing belt cover is not damaged. Keep the engine bay clean and avoid any leakages.
Symptoms of malfunction
When parts included in the timing belt kit fail, thisaffects the operation of the entire valvetrain. You may hear noises and knocking around the engine and popping sounds in the silencer. The belt slips from one tooth to another which impedes the ignition system operation and may disturb the air–fuel mixture formation. During visual inspection of the belt, you can notice signs of wear, dents, or small cracks. The pulleys often get corroded. Grooves and scratches may appear on their surfaces. Shiny smooth areas or dents also indicate malfunctions of the mechanism.
Causes of malfunction
The belt is subjected to significant loads and deteriorates due to normal wear and tear. Pulley bearings degrade over time too. Dirt and moisture, which get inside through damaged seals, may cause the bearings to fail sooner. The same goes for an overtightened belt. Incorrect tensioning is also dangerous for the pulleys. Foreign objects trapped between the pulleys and the belt will also damage the former. Jammed bearings or a seized water pump pulley will cause the belt to snap. Misalignment of the pulleys caused by installation errors is also dangerous for the belt.
