• With a tether. The cap is connected to the tank neck with the help of a special rubber tether, which also prevents it from being lost.

Operating tips

Refuel your car at proven fuel stations. Low-quality or contaminated fuel can cause breakdown of the fuel tank cap. Perform thorough diagnostics of the component approximately once a year. Moreover, briefly inspect it every time when refueling, in order to detect damages in good time.

If your car has a metal fuel tank, check if there is no rust on its inlet. If necessary, remove a corroded layer and treat the surface with a rust converter. This will help to prevent soiling of the cap.

Do not try to disassemble the lock to extract the key from the removed cap as you may damage it. Regularly clean the part.

Malfunction symptoms

A specific hissing sound can be heard when the fuel tank cap is being unscrewed. It is a sign of outside air coming in, or fuel vapours escaping. However, if the sound is too intense and long-lasting, check whether the mechanical filters of the part are not clogged and valves are intact. Also you should make sure that the canister of the evaporative emission control system is in good working condition.

Loss of tightness of the part is often indicated by fuel streaks near the fuel tank inlet.

Causes of malfunctions

Usually, a fuel tank cap breaks down due to being soiled. As a rule, it is contributed by refueling with poor quality fuel, use of various fuel additives, corrosion of the tank, failure to replace the fuel filter according to the prescribed schedule, or wear-out of the fuel pump. Sometimes, metal components can start to corrode, which may lead to clogging of the valves. Sealing elements deteriorate in the course of time, which can cause leakiness of the component.
